sedumThere are many planting themes to follow.  In the age of the hosepipe ban it is worth considering a Mediterranean style dry garden which does not require much watering and produces colour and scent all summer long.

Contemporary architecture and landscaping would be enhanced by lush exotic planting or a minimalist style using just three or four species.
 
 
 
 
Work with your natural environment.  If you are surrounded by trees, plant woodland style plants; if you are struggling to maintain your lawn set some of it aside as a wild flower meadow.

If your garden is small create seasonal interest using containers or have one plant that highlights each season.

For a vibrant look choose colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel eg. blue and orange.  For a calming effect select colours that are adjacant such as blues and purples.
